Liposuction

According to recent statistics, liposuction is the most commonly performed operative cosmetic surgery procedure. The purpose of this technique is to improve undesirable contours by selectively removing some of the underlying fatty tissue using a suction device. Recently, the technique of ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) has been introduced. This technique adds ultrasonic vibrations through a special instrument that assists in the break-up of fat. Many plastic surgeons today use both techniques to optimize their results.

Once a contour has been altered, it is permanently changed. This does not mean you cannot get fat! It means that any future weight gains may appear in areas you did not have problems with before. It's still important to exercise and watch you diet. Liposuction can help jump-start a program of better fitness, including diet and exercise. Fatty tissue can be removed by suction from virtually any area of the body outside the muscles; from the chin to the ankles, however, it is important to remember that, for all practical purposes, this technique is for the changing of body contours and not for weight loss.

Liposuction can vary tremendously in complexity, duration and volume of fat removed. It is important to have a detailed, thoughtful consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon to learn how this procedure may benefit you.
