Abdominoplasty is a procedure designed to re-contour the abdomen. Like many procedures in plastic surgery, there is not just one operation to improve the shape of the abdomen. When it comes to this area of the body, patients may complain of too much fatty tissue with or without sagging skin. Many women have skin that sags and has stretch marks in the lower, and sometimes the upper, abdomen that they find unsightly. Also, the muscles of the abdominal wall (rectus abdominis muscles) may have been stretched apart in the mid-line, causing a roundness to the wall of the abdomen that does not respond to exercise.
If the problem is one of excess fat, liposuction alone may be all that is necessary. This, however, is seldom the case. If there is lax skin in the lower portion of the abdomen only and good shape of the underlying wall, excision of the extra skin may be required. If there is excess skin and fat and the underlying abdominal wall is stretched out and rounded, excision of skin and fat and repair of the wide area in the abdominal wall (diastasis recti) is required. So, as you can see, not all abdominal contouring procedures are the same for every patient. It depends on their individual anatomy and expectations.
