Surgery to correct the appearance of the external ear is called otoplasty. This operation most commonly done to improve the appearance of ears that protrude from the side of the head. There are well-know anatomical causes for protruding ears and they are readily corrected.
The operation is commonly done in children once they have reached a point where they perceive this as a problem and/or when other children at school make fun of the appearance of their ears. It is also done in adults.
