Restylane® is an injectable substance made of hyaluronic acid (HA) and has been in use since 1996. It was developed in Sweden as a tissue filler for the treatment of the aging face and lip enhancement. It has recently gained a great deal of attention in the United States because of its efficacy and safety when used in a variety of areas of the face. Unlike collagen, allergy is rare and skin testing is not required prior to use. It has developed a great reputation among plastic surgeons due to its efficacy and safety. It can be used to fill lines around the mouth (vertical lip lines and marionette lines) as well as minimize the appearance of the jowl and enhance the lips. It is not prone to clumping and nodule formation in the lip area.
The effects of Restylane® are not permanent and the length of time it lasts varies with each individual. In general, a patient may be ready for a touch up within about 6 months, however a touch up can be performed at any time following the initial treatment. It is best to thoroughly treat a given area rather than try to spread a small amount of the product over a large area, as the results will be far better and longer lasting. The lack of permanence is actually somewhat of an advantage, in our opinion, because it keeps the patient in control of their looks over time as their taste and trends may change.
