Those unsightly, small red or purple veins on the legs are commonly referred to as spider veins. These are treatable with injections (sclerotherapy) or laser. In general, the lasers are preferred on the very small (<1mm in diameter) red vessels. We most commonly use the technique of sclerotherapy for the treatment of spider veins. The objective of this technique is to cause an injury to the inside of the troublesome vessel by injecting a concentrated salt solution (hypertonic saline) into it. This stimulates the vessel to heal itself closed. We can often get a nice improvement in the appearance of the legs with 2 or three sessions of sclerotherapy. It is necessary to wear very snug compressive hosiery afterwards to insure maximum results. This technique should not be thought of as a means to eliminate these veins, but a way to improve the appearance of the legs. Some small veins invariably remain behind.
We see many patients for sclerotherapy. The bulk of the consultations come in the Spring, but due to the fact that it may take several treatments to get maximum results, the compression hosiery must be worn and the treated areas must be kept out of the sun, many patients elect to postpone beginning treatment until the Fall. In fact, the Fall and Winter have become the busiest times of the year for sclerotherapy in our practice.
